About Dr. Nancy Vanderheide
A Practice Built Over Nearly Four Decades
Dr. Nancy Vanderheide is a depth-oriented relational psychoanalyst and integrative psychotherapist based in Los Angeles. For nearly four decades, she has worked with individuals, couples, and families — helping people move from patterns that limit them toward a more coherent, expansive, and authentic experience of themselves and their relationships.
Her work draws from a wide intellectual and clinical lineage: relational psychoanalysis, self psychology, attachment theory, trauma-informed practice, Internal Family Systems, chaos theory and nonlinear dynamic systems, theories of creativity and symbolism, and spiritually informed reflection. These are not frameworks she applies mechanically. They are ways of seeing that she has integrated over a lifetime of study, teaching, clinical practice, and personal development.

Her Approach to Healing
Dr. Vanderheide believes that healing takes place most readily through safe interpersonal experiences — experiences enriched by understanding, emotional presence, and the gradual restoration of self-trust. Transformation, in her view, is not about fixing what is broken. It is about helping people recognize the limiting, often unconscious thoughts and behaviors that developed in response to unmet needs, and reclaiming the parts of themselves that learned to hide, adapt, or compensate.
She works from the conviction that our early relationships with significant caregivers establish a kind of blueprint, one that quietly shapes how we interpret our experiences and what we expect from ourselves, from others, and from life. Because we tend to notice information that confirms our existing expectations while missing much that challenges them, these patterns are often self-reinforcing, persisting long past the circumstances that created them.
Because these patterns form in relationship, Dr. Vanderheide believes they are most effectively explored and transformed within a similar context — the safety of a discerning, empathic, and genuinely present therapeutic relationship.
Credentials & Training
Dr. Nancy Vanderheide holds two doctoral degrees. Her first, a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Ryokan College in Los Angeles, was followed by a second Psy.D. in Psychoanalysis from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (ICP), one of the country's leading psychoanalytic training institutes, where she later served as President.
She is licensed in California as a Clinical Psychologist (PSY 16232), a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC31487), and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor — a breadth of licensure that reflects the unusually wide scope of her training and practice.
Her advanced training includes two extended supervision groups with Dr. Robert Stolorow, one of the most influential figures in contemporary relational psychoanalysis and intersubjectivity theory. She also completed the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program at ICP, where she subsequently served as Training Analyst, Supervisor, and Faculty for nearly a decade.
She is currently Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology and Assistant Editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues — two of the field's most respected peer-reviewed publications. She is the recipient of the Dr. Daphne S. Stolorow Memorial Essay Prize from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
Dr. Vanderheide is currently Faculty at the New Center for Psychoanalysis, the Wright Institute Los Angeles, Ryokan College, and the International Conference on the Psychology of the Self — where she has presented since 2001.
She has maintained a private practice in Los Angeles for more than 30 years, working with individuals, couples, and families across a wide range of presenting concerns. Her published work includes 14 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as a co-edited volume — Self and Systems: Explorations in Contemporary Self Psychology — published by the New York Academy of Sciences.
What She Brings That Feels Rare
What distinguishes Dr. Vanderheide's work is not any single credential or framework, but the rare coherence of the whole. She holds emotional, psychological, and spiritual material simultaneously — with rigor, warmth, and deep attunement — without collapsing complexity into easy answers.
She does not reduce her clients to their symptoms, their diagnoses, or their presenting problems. She takes them seriously as thoughtful, meaning-seeking people who have access to far more insight and wisdom than they may yet know.
Clients consistently describe a quality of being truly seen, not evaluated, not diagnosed, not advised, but genuinely met.
Her Vision for This Work
Dr. Vanderheide's larger purpose is to help restore depth, meaning, and psychological seriousness in a culture that often privileges speed, surface-level solutions, and disconnection from inner life. She is committed to generating, discovering, and integrating wisdom about the human condition as we continue to evolve — at spiritual, personal, and interpersonal levels.
She works from a foundational belief: We enter this world whole, and we carry that blueprint throughout our entire lives. In spite of the conditioning and even trauma that life inflicts, our healthiest, most loving and generative self remains brilliantly alive, waiting to be sought after and found.
Her work is not about optimization. It is about becoming more fully oneself, with honesty, compassion, and courage, in a world that too often discounts depth.
A Note to Those Considering Therapy
If you are someone who is psychologically minded, genuinely motivated, and open to exploring yourself with curiosity and honesty, including the parts that are uncomfortable or unfamiliar, this work may be for you.
Dr. Vanderheide's ideal client is not one who has everything figured out, but one who is willing to begin a journey and stay with it. One who understands that the most valuable growth tends to arise in direct encounter with the challenges life presents, and who is open to discovering that they carry far more resources for their own transformation than they have ever been told.
